Bumpdate October 4th

The Weekly Newsletter for Heart of Houston Birth and Wellness Families.

Happy October Everyone!

We hope everyone had a great weekend. Although we didn't have any babies last week we had a great time catching up with expectant couples during our labor rehearsal class on Sunday. We covered the stages of labor and practiced a few comfort measures that are sure to come in handy during labor. The couples had a chance to visit each of the six stations set up around the birth center with various types of tools for easing the discomforts of labor. We practiced massage, vocalization, guided visualization and breath work. What are some things that help you during labor? The date for our next comfort measure class will be up next week.

Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice

Have I mentioned how much I love October? Houston has so many great outdoor activities for families this month. A favorite for pumpkin patch photo ops and a smorgasbord of activities is the Fall Festival at Dewberry Farms in Brookshire or the Old McDonald Farm with it's petting zoo and duck pond. If you're wanting to stay inside the loop take some time to visit the Houston Zoo for the annual Zoo Boo happening everyday in October. If pumpkin patches and pony rides aren't your thing, stop by the Bayou City Art Festival and see some of Houston's best artists including our friend Tony Paraná who painted the artwork hanging in our front room. The Greek Festival is a great way to get your daily caloric allowance in one sitting or enjoy locally brewed beverages at Houston Oktoberfest. Most neighborhood churches also have smaller fall festivals that are open to the public as well. Close out the month with my personal favorite, Dia De Los Muertos Festival at MECA Houston. Send us your pumpkin patch pictures and we'll share them on our social media pages! And, don't forget to RSVP to our first annual HOH Halloween Party!

Car Seat Safety

This weekend our friend Angela Fagg will teach us the ins and outs of choosing and installing car seats. Mary and I love helping folks strap those sweet newborns into their car seats as we wave goodbye to each fresh family but it is so important for you to know the proper way to install your child's car seat correctly. Angela will have a live demonstration on proper installation and things to consider before you buy. This class is open to the public. Tickets are $20 for Heart of Houston clients and Whole Heart Collective members. $30 for non-members.

Oh baby...

Why does sexuality often take a backseat to the focus on growing and raising a new human? One of our favorite doulas and sexual health & wellness educator, Rachel Stonebrook will go over physiological and mental changes during the perinatal cycle and address some common fears and concerns about sex during pregnancy, labor and the postpartum period. In this class, we will define sexuality, debunk myths on sex during pregnancy and discuss the new normal of becoming parents who are still sexual beings. Class is free to HOH clients and Whole Heart Collective members and $20 for non-members.
