Short and sweet

Happy Tuesday dear friends. I'll keep this week's issue short and sweet since I'm already a day late! Our team welcomed two little ones into the world this past week. Mary, Rowan and Bethany are keeping busy with all these spring babies. As luck would have it I was off call and missed out again. This is longest I've gone without attending a birth since I was on maternity leave! Can I just say though that I'm so proud of what we are building here at Heart of Houston. Mary Love has managed to put together a team of birthy folks that work beautifully together. We recently added two more birth assistants to our team and opened up another full day of clinic. Once we get into the new space we'll have all the room we need to introduce new programming as well. We can't wait to share it with you! Next week I'll introduce you to our newest team members and some programming ideas. Oh and a quick note, group will be on zoom tomorrow and in person on Thursday. Hopefully we can continue to meet in person on Thursdays from now on.

This Week

Meet the Awai family!

Who's in your family? Bevan, Tarah, Petra (8 months), and Charlie Tango (our 9 year old Yorkie).

What is your biggest challenge currently? We are currently navigating food allergies. At around 3 months old, Petra started having problematic poops and her pediatrician suspected a milk and soy allergy. Since I was breastfeeding, I was advised to cut these foods from my diet. When her symptoms did not resolve, I cut more, and more, and more…and ended up on a total elimination diet until her poops were no longer problematic! Since starting solids, we’ve had to trial foods slowly and systematically to pinpoint which ones were the culprits. What makes it extra challenging is that I do not introduce a new food back into my diet until I know for sure Petra can tolerate it. I want my breastmilk to remain safe for her at all times! Each food trial is both nerve-racking (will she tolerate this food?) and exciting (We both may have a new food in our diet soon!)

What's your best pregnancy, birth, or parenting tip? My best parenting tip is to stop googling things! Ask your parent friends or Midwife instead. Or, if you do turn to Google, mentally prepare yourself to read that the symptom your looking up is actually a sign of a rare and extremely severe disorder.

What's one thing you can't do without as a pregnant person or parent? Find your village! I don’t know what I would do without Heart of Houston. I talk to other HOH parents daily! Find your people. Reach out to other parents. Talk to them. Ask questions. Go to events. Share your experiences. Oh, and oogle all the cute babies!

How do you fill your cup when it's empty? I meditate daily, even if it’s only for 5 minutes. It doesn’t take much energy. I can do it even if I’m nap trapped. There’s literally no excuse not to keep this promise to myself. Aside from all the amazing benefits of meditation, it ensures I do at least one thing for myself every single day. Prioritizing this helps me feel like Tarah and not just Petra’s mom.

Tell us about something (or someone) you love. Bevan and I love slacklining! It’s like tight rope walking except instead of tight it’s slack and instead of walking on a wire, you walk on a 1 inch piece of fabric. It combines all the things We love: movement, mindfulness and meditation, balance, the outdoors, and community! If it’s something you want to try, we’re always down to show you the ropes!
